Kindalin’s Five Stars of Safety

Practical systems, trained educators and carefully managed environments that help children learn, play and grow safely.

For over three decades, Kindalin has provided safe, secure and nurturing learning environments. Our 5 Stars of Safety reflect the policies, procedures and everyday practices we have in place to help protect every child in our care.

Star BulletActive Supervision

Children are actively supervised at all times. At Kindalin, supervision is planned, responsive and active — not just watching from a distance.

Educators:

  • position themselves for clear sightlines across indoor and outdoor spaces
  • scan learning spaces, playgrounds, bathrooms, nappy change areas and sleep/rest areas throughout the day
  • adjust supervision during play, meals, rest, toileting, arrivals, departures and transitions
  • stay within line of sight of another staff member when working with children
  • support children with hygiene, toileting and personal care routines in a way that maintains privacy, dignity and visibility to another Educator
  • communicate with one another so every area remains supervised
  • use a “see it, say it” approach to raise supervision risks, hazards or unsafe practice immediately

Star BulletSpeaking Up

Child safety is everyone’s responsibility. Educators, families and children are encouraged to raise concerns, ask questions and report anything that may affect safety or wellbeing.

Educators are supported to:

  • recognise signs of harm, neglect, inappropriate conduct or unsafe practice
  • respond calmly to concerns or disclosures
  • document concerns accurately
  • follow child protection and mandatory reporting responsibilities
  • raise low-level concerns early, rather than waiting for an issue to become serious
  • support children to understand personal boundaries, express feelings and seek help from trusted adults
Star BulletSafe Surroundings

Children learn and play in environments that are checked, maintained and managed to reduce risks before they arise.

Kindalin maintains safe environments by:

  • playgrounds, yards, gates, pathways and equipment
  • learning spaces, bathrooms, nappy change areas and sleep/rest areas
  • secure entry and exit procedures
  • safe storage of medication, cleaning products and hazardous items
  • maintenance requests, prompt repairs, internal audits and risk assessments
  • support from Kindalin’s dedicated Facilities and Maintenance Teams

Star BulletTrusted Relationships

Children are safer when they are known. Strong, respectful relationships help children feel secure, understood and supported.

Educators build understanding through:

  • daily conversations with families
  • awareness of each child’s routines, interests, strengths and friendships
  • understanding each child’s communication style, developmental needs and comfort cues
  • handovers between educators
  • consistent routines that help children feel secure
  • warm, respectful relationships with clear professional boundaries

These relationships help children receive consistent care between home and Kindalin.

Star BulletSafe Practice

Safe practice means following clear expectations in the everyday routines where safety matters most.

Educators follow procedures for:

  • child protection and mandatory reporting
  • first aid, illness, injury and incident response
  • arrivals, departures and authorised collection
  • sleep and rest, toileting, nappy changing and personal care
  • food safety, allergies, hygiene and infection control
  • visitors, volunteers, students, contractors and professional conduct
  • photography, technology, privacy and mobile-free environments

Every Kindalin centre is a mobile-free zone for staff, families and visitors from the moment they enter the foyer. Photos and videos of children are taken, used, and stored only in line with our policies and family permissions.

Every new team member completes Kindalin’s recruitment, screening, child safety training and onboarding before starting in-centre. Educators are introduced to Kindalin’s standards, mandatory reporting, and the Kindalin Way, which is supported by centre leaders, our buddy system, and our Heart and Soul team.
